The Rodeo Fire

The Rodeo fire ... scary stuff only 20 or 30 miles away from here.

June 19, 2002

Pictures taken about 2:30 PM:

Looking East, the sunlight filtered through all that smoke give everything an orange cast.

Looking South-East, a different angle, different color cast. Very odd.

Looking South toward the source of the smoke ... now it's got a purple tinge.

Looking North, back to yellow orange.

Looking West

Pictures taken about 7:00 PM:

Looking East, the sun is low enough on the horizon to shine under the smoke plume now.

Looking South-South-West, toward the origin of the smoke

Looking East again, another color yet again

Looking South-South-East, towards Show Low, which is just to the right of Porter Mountain, which you can see just sticking up to the right of center on the horizon.

Ash-fall on the front steps, looking streight down. Those black and white speckles came from the fire 20 or 30 miles away. It's been "snowing" ash all day. Kinda reminds me of the time Mt. Saint Hellen's blew up (lot more ash from that, though!).

About 4:00 PM:

The wind is worse today but the smoke is not directly over us like it was yesterday.

Overlooking Snowflake from Snowflake Heights. Looking South West. Snowflake is down in the valley on the far right.

Looking West over Snowflake, which is in the valley behind the houses at the end of the road there.

Again looking West/South-West. You can see the green of the irrigated pastures that are just this side of the town proper.

Day three of the fire. I don't think it will move this far North.

Afternoon sun through the smoke.

Day 5 of the fire. Evacuation of Show Low ordered. "Snowflake is in no danger" they said. No danger unless you need to breathe maybe!

Sunset through the smoke.

Day 10 of the fire. Smoke has settled down into dull grey all over. Today we got a bit of blue sky directly overhead and the sun wasn't so red/orange. For the last several days the smoke has seemed not as dense. Got a good sunset tonight. Can see some stars.

Another sunset through the smoke.
